How Many Wet Diapers Should a Newborn Have?

Understanding your newborn's diaper output is one of the best ways to know they're getting enough to eat. Here's what to expect.

The Quick Answer

By day 5-6, your newborn should have at least 6 wet diapers per day. But the first few days are different as your milk comes in.

Wet Diaper Guidelines by Age

Day-by-Day Guide (First Week)

  • Day 1: 1 wet diaper
  • Day 2: 2 wet diapers
  • Day 3: 3 wet diapers
  • Day 4: 4 wet diapers
  • Day 5+: 6+ wet diapers per day

What About Dirty Diapers?

Bowel movements vary more than wet diapers. In the first few days, expect dark, sticky meconium. By day 3-4, stools should transition to yellow, seedy poops (for breastfed babies) or tan/yellow (for formula-fed babies).

After the first month, some breastfed babies may go several days without a bowel movement, and that's normal as long as they're having plenty of wet diapers.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Contact Your Pediatrician If:

  • Fewer wet diapers than expected for baby's age
  • Dark urine or orange/brick dust in diaper
  • No bowel movement by day 4
  • Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, no tears, sunken soft spot)

Tips for Tracking

In those sleep-deprived early days, it's easy to lose count. A simple diaper log helps you spot patterns and gives you peace of mind that baby is eating enough.
